Road transport remains an essential feature of the EU transportation mix and the European economy in general. Regrettably, it is also a persistent contributor to environmental pollution and climate change. Reconciling the necessity for a dynamic road transport sector with the imperative of reducing the associated impact on the environment and human health is one of the key challenges currently confronting the European Union, its Member States and its citizens.
In the context of volatile fuel prices, concerns over security of supply, air quality, climate change, and the ongoing global economic crisis, Europe will need to make optimum use of all available energy resources in order to achieve its strategic, economic and environmental objectives. In a debate that is too often polarized, with unsustainable dependence on conventional fuels and a rapid transition toward unavailable or unproven technologies presented as the only options, Autogas, currently Europe’s most widely used alternative transport fuel, may represent a ‘third way’. Through debate and discussion, this event aims to examine the capacity of Autogas to help bridge the gap and ease Europe’s transition to a more sustainable road transport model.
