Double vision as optic craze sweeps Europe

As Europe's youngsters face up to the hectic demands of modern life without even the prospect of a royal wedding to excite them, it appears that many are turning to the practice of 'eyeballing' to pass the time.

Sergio Berlato, an Italian EPP deputy, is concerned by the "new fashion of using vodka as if it were eyewash" and has asked the commission whether it plans to take action, or will merely turn a blind eye to this new hedonistic craze.

Concerns have been further raised by recent surveys from pharmacies showing an increase in the number of young people purchasing eye lotion at the weekend.

The effects of alcohol ingestion through the eye socket are reported to be much quicker than if consumed in the traditional manner. However, Berlato warns that irritation and lacerations of the eye can be caused through continued use.
