Europe's ambition to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 is seen as a key driver of the upcoming European commission energy roadmap to 2050.
Following the low carbon economy roadmap adopted by the commission earlier this year, the energy roadmap is expected to strongly focus on decarbonisation in the energy sector while also seeking to preserve Europe's competitiveness and strengthen security of energy supplies.
What then is the current state of play? What policy challenges are likely to emerge from the energy roadmap and what role will oil and oil refined products play in Europe's future energy supply?
On 22 November, The Parliament Magazine, in association with EUROPIA the European Petroleum Industry Association, held a roundtable panel debate hosted by Edit Herczog MEP on the possible future scenarios for demand for oil products in a low-carbon economy and the potential impacts on the refining and marketing industry.
The event also looked to discuss the six key policy recommendations of Europia's recently published report on EU energy pathways to 2050 which sets out proposals to ensure future access to affordable, secure, reliable and sustainable energy.
