In 2007 the Brewers of Europe submitted an ambitious pan-European commitment to the European Alcohol & Health Forum (EAHF) aimed at developing responsible beer advertising across the EU. In 2010 the time came to assess the progress of the industry’s commitments and to have the results independently verified.
The report, “Responsible Beer Advertising through Self-Regulation”, developed with the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA) and the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) outlined the key results. The report has also received independent assurance from KPMG Sustainability and has been backed by Robert Madelin, the former DG SANCO director general at the European Commission.Towards Better Regulation? The report demonstrates how advertising self-regulation is delivering better regulation for the brewing sector and producing real, tangible benefits for Europe’s citizens.
Regulation and self-regulation – working hand in hand?
Taking this report as a starting point, the questions are; can self regulation be trusted, does Europe need it, what kind of positive role can it play, where is it needed – and where not? Ultimately, is there a role for self regulation in the better and smarter regulation agenda?
Roundtable debate: make your mark, give your opinion
The European Parliament Beer Club, in association with the Parliament Magazine invites both Beer Club members and non-members to join us for a debate on the issues of regulation and self-regulation at a special lunchtime roundtable sponsored by Sean Kelly MEP on 14 July 2010.
