Today in the EU

Business and enterprise ministers meet in Brussels today and Tuesday. The Competitiveness council will today be briefed by commission chiefs Günther Verheugen and Charlie McCreevy on the commission’s European Recovery Plan for growth and jobs.

Eurogroup president Jean-Claude Juncker and economic and monetary affairs commissioner, Joaquin Almunia will hold a press conference today following the Eurogroup ministers meeting today in Brussels.

Employment commissioner Vladimir Spidla gives the opening speech today at a conference in Brussels marking European Day of People with Disabilities.

Georgian prime minister Grigol Mgaloblishvili and external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner will hold a joint press conference following their meeting today in Brussels.

Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith today visits Brussels for talks with environment commissioner Stavros Dimas and agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer-Boel. Fischer-Boel and Smith are expected to formally sign an EU-Australian Wine Agreement later today.

Several French ministers appear in the European parliament today - the start of a busy week which includes a mini plenary - to give an account of their country’s presidency of the EU.

The constitutional affairs committee votes on a report by French Greens MEP Gerard Onesta on the petitions process while the same committee votes on a report by Polish Socialist Genowefa Grabowska on developing civil dialogue.

Elsewhere, the agriculture committee holds a workshop on reform of the agriculture sector.

The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union holds a hearing entitled the security of Europe’s energy supply in Paris.

DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the European Commission holds a European Day of People with Disabilities Conference entitled Acting locally for a society for all.

DG INFSO participates in the second EU-Korea Cooperation forum on ICT research over two days.  They also participate in a two day event entitled the The Audiovisual Media Services Directive in the context of digitalisation: a new era for Europe's audiovisual media regulation in Istanbul.

The e-Inclusion Ministerial Conference continues until Tuesday in Vienna. DG INFSO participates.

The ECB holds a two day conference on Global Financial Linkages, Transmission of Shocks and Asset Prices in Frankfurt.

MEP Claude Turmes holds Cross Briefing Trialogue Negotiations on the Renewables Directive.

Knowledge4Innovation hold the Lisbon Forum over two days in the European Parliament.

The British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium hosts the EU Committee Business Lunch with Ambassador Milena Vicenova, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the EU.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States launches their latest public opinion survey, Transatlantic Trends on Immigration. They also hold a discussion on Georgia’s future with the EU and Nato.  

Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung holds a debate entitled Crisis as a Permanent Condition in Berlin.

The Transatlantic Institute holds a dinner debate entitled Assessing Iran’s Challenge to European Interests’.

The Security and Defence Agenda holds a debate on the security implications of Europe's energy thirst.

The Centre for European Policy Studies holds a conference entitled The European Response to the Financial Crisis.

The European Policy Centre holds a joint meeting of the EU Neighbourhood Forum and the Migration and Integration Forum.
