Today in the EU

Spanish secretary of state for security, Antonio Camacho, opens a seminar on good law enforcement practices relating to the prevention of violence against women, and the protection of women who are victims of gender violence, which takes place in Madrid.

The informal meeting of competitiveness ministers concludes in San Sebastian, chaired by Spanish industry minister Miguel Sebastian. Today, ministers will discuss electric vehicles.

The European commission announces today whether major internet companies have acted on their commitment to improve the safety of under-18s who use social networking sites. An EU-wide campaign to encourage teenagers to "Think before you post" will also be launched in more than 60 countries. Viviane Reding, outgoing information society and media commissioner, and Italian EPP deputy Roberta Angelilli both take part.

Alexander Weiss, chief executive of the European Defence Agency, holds a press conference in Brussels with Francesco Guarguaglini, president and chairman of the Council of Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe.

Parliament is in plenary in Strasbourg, where MEPs will vote on whether to accept or reject commission president José Manuel Barroso's new college following a formal presentation of his team and discussion of their policy priorities. Parliament president Jerzy Buzek holds a press conference following the vote.

•    The European commission hosts a conference on the ACP-EU Water Facility under the headline, Access to water, access to health, to announce the launch of the second water facility programme.

•    The Foundation for Strategic Research, with the support of the Delegation for Strategic affairs of the French Defense Ministry, organises the First European meetings on terrorist threat and struggle against terrorism. Jean-Paul Laborde, Director of UN Counter-Terrorism Task-force presents the UN action. The meetings last for three days in Paris, France.

•    A joint European Economic and Social Committee and Greek Economic Social Committee conference is held on European migration policy: contemporary challenges and effects on Mediterranean member states of the EU.

•    The European Economic and Social Committee holds a public hearing on copyrights with particular attention to music.

•    A debate commenting on the study published by the European commission on the quantification of antitrust damages is organised by the Academy of European Law.

•    An economic policy forum, Caught between a rock and a hard place: options for public finance consolidation in the aftermath of the crisis, is held by the European Policy Centre.

•    The conference, Bridging efforts: connecting civilian security and military capability development, is held by the European Defence Agency. Keynote speakers include Baroness Catherine Ashton.

•    The Centre and The Climate Group organise a roundtable discussion on how the European Union and the United States can engage China in a dialogue in the aftermath of the Copenhagen Climate Change Accord.

•    Logos Public Affairs holds a debate called, The Lisbon Treaty and its impact on public affairs practitioners?

•    The Robert Schuman Foundation and the Centre for International Studies and Research organise a seminar, The European Union and its quest for political legitimacy - the development of a joint discourse? The seminar aims to provide information about the possibility of a new joint discourse on the European Union.
