Europe is ready to help
Jerzy Buzek
Parliament's president Jerzy Buzek said the EU is ready to accept Kosovo into the "European family".
But, speaking on Tuesday, the Polish MEP cautioned that the country must first meet the "strict" criteria for EU membership.
Buzek was speaking after a meeting in parliament with the president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga. It was her first visit to parliament.
Speaking at a news conference later, Buzek said the pair had had a "very rich discussion" and appealed for Kosovo's independence to be recognised.
He pointed out that parliament had asked for this in its resolution of July 2010.
Buzek added, "Kosovo's future lies in the EU, together with all Western Balkan countries. We want Kosovo to achieve reconciliation, stability, democracy and prosperity.
"Any progress in that regard requires good relations with all neighbours and strengthening the rule of law. We discussed intensively the problems connected to organised crime and corruption."
He said he expected Kosovo to "deepen" dialogue with Belgrade, adding, "If the necessary conditions are met, Kosovo can rely on parliament's support for enhancing the partnership with the EU, especially in working towards visa liberalisation.
"I am delighted that progress in the EU mediated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is visible at last. Last Friday's agreements on customs stamps and cadastral records will boost regional trade and practically improve people's everyday life.
"Europe is ready to help."
Speaking alongside Buzek, Jahjaga said her visit had given her a chance to update parliament on the current situation in her country and current issues, such as electoral reform.
She said Kosovo was moving on a "clear path" towards eventual EU membership, adding, "This is the only perspective of Kosovans, irrespective of their race or religion."
