Hans-Gert Pöttering visits Latvia
Hans-Gert Pöttering visited Latvia last week from Tuesday 19th to Thursday 21 of August on the invitation of Mr Gundars Daudze, Speaker of the Saeima (National Parliament) of the Republic of Latvia.
The president met with the President of Latvia Mr Valdis Zalters and foreign minister Maris Riekstins, as well as the Speaker of the Saeima Mr Gundars Daudze and have an exchange-of-views with the leadership of political parties in the parliament.The president also met with representatives of different national minorities and representatives of churches.
Highlights of the visit included a trip to the region of Sabile and the city of Kuldiga. Pöttering also addressed the citizen's forum on the 'future of Europe', and together with Mr Gundars Daudze, the Speaker of the Saeima, laid a wreath at the freedom monument symbolising the independence of Latvia.
