Ketchup song and supermodel top EU chart

EU debut albums from the sublime to the ridiculous were feted for their success in 2003 at the Cannes international music festival this weekend.

European diversity was amply illustrated by the winners, with artists from Carla Bruni to girl group Las Ketchup walking away with prizes.

Ex-supermodel Bruni’s debut album ‘Quelqu’un m’a dit’ met with critical acclaim on its release, to the surprise of those used to a less glorious transition from catwalk to recording studio.

But ‘Hijas del tomate’ from Las Ketchup is best known for ‘The Ketchup Song’, Europop trash classic of hen nights and undergraduate parties across the EU.

Sales in the album’s country of origin were excluded from the statistics.

So the UK gave the world stadium rockers The Darkness, whilst Italy produced clean cut 23 year old Tiziano Ferro.

Ireland meanwhile found success with Beach Boy wannabes The Thrills.

Other winners up there with 'The Ketchup Song' were Masterplan (Germany), Lasgo (Belgium), Saybia (Denmark) and Mariza (Portugal).

Whilst the 2003 exports of Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, Sweden and Finland apparently did not cut the mustard.
