Mugabe regime must end
Parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering has spoken out against Robert Mugabe, leader of Zimbabwe, and said that he must go.
Pöttering said that the situation in the country, where includes a recent cholera outbreak, extremely high levels of inflation and soldiers running wild, had reached a point where Mugabe’s continuing grip on power was preventing a solution to the crisis.
“The determination of Robert Mugabe to cling to power is a major obstacle to resolving the crisis. It is high time that the suffering of the Zimbabwean people, brought about by the actions of the brutal Mugabe regime, came to an end,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The European Parliament has grave concerns about the worsening crisis,” he said.
Pöttering’s statement follows the recent outbreak of the cholera disease which has hit Zimbabwe, which at the last count had affected 13,960 people and led to 589 deaths.
Pöttering also highlighted the continuing violence against members and supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change as further signs of a fast deteriorating situation which could only be resolved if Mugabe’s regime is brought to an end.
“The EU must continue to exert all possible pressure to end this regime so that human rights and democracy can be defended," he said.
