Commenting on the judgment of the German Federal Constitutional Court concerning the Lisbon Treaty, parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering said:
"The Federal Constitutional Court has, albeit conditionally, in principle cleared the way for the Treaty of Lisbon to be signed by German President Horst Köhler and for its ratification in Germany to be completed.
"I very much welcome the fact that the Bundestag and the Bundesrat intend to adopt the amendment to the ancillary law called for by the Federal Constitutional Court before the elections to the Bundestag, thereby enabling prompt signature of the Treaty of Lisbon by the German President.
"Swift completion of the ratification procedure in Germany should then give a signal to those countries which have not yet completed the ratification process.
The Treaty of Lisbon will make the European Union more democratic and transparent and better equipped to act. There is therefore a need for it to come into force as soon as possible."
