The European commission is set to voice concern about the impact of the planned merger between Gaz de France and Suez.

The FT reports that the EU executive is concerned about the dominant position the merged group would have in the French gas market.

The commission is also expected to hit out at Gaz de France's stake in Belgian electricity company SPE.

Suez's influence over gas and electricity network operators in Belgium could also come under fire.

The paper reports that the commission could make its concerns known as early as Friday in a confidential statement of objections.

On Thursday French finance minister Thierry Breton said he is confident the planned merger will win approval from the commission.

The commission is due to make a final ruling on the deal by October 25.
