Welcome
About Action for Blind People
Action for Blind People is a dynamic national charity founded in 1857. It is the third largest charity in the UK working with blind and partially sighted people to enable them to transform their lives. Our mission is to inspire change and create opportunities to enable blind and partially sighted people to have equal voice and equal choice. Every year we provide direct support for more than 20,000 people.
Action for Blind People exists because:
- Nearly 2 million people in the UK are blind or partially sighted. Of these, over two thirds who are eligible are not registered as blind or partially sighted.
- Nine out of ten older people with sight problems are on an income of less than half the national average - a widely accepted definition of poverty. One in 16 older people with sight problems admits to having gone without food at some time in order to pay their bills.
- More than half of older people with sight problems are unaware of benefits they are entitled to (7).
- 75% of blind and partially sighted people of working age are unemployed (9)
- 20% of older blind and partially sighted people won't have left their home in the last week.
