Welcome to UCTE

The "Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity"(UCTE) is the association of transmission system operators incontinental Europe that defines the reliability standards for asafe and efficient operation of the all interconnected networksthat constitute the building blocks for robust electricitymarkets.

The UCTE system extends from Lisbon to Warsaw and from Denmarkto Greece. It supplies more than 400 million people with electricenergy with an annual electricity consumption of some 2300 TWh.

The main missions of UCTE cover:

  • Technical and operational co-ordination of interconnection inthe UCTE synchronous area
  • Monitoring and control of the short-term reliability of thesystem with regard to load, frequency control, stability,etc.
  • Medium-term adequacy between generation and load (5-year powerbalance forecast)
  • Study and monitor the development of the synchronousarea

Current issues addressed within UCTE are

  • the processing of requests for interconnection to the UCTEsynchronous area (Mediterranean Ring, Turkey, systems of the CISand Baltics)
  • the preparation of a comprehensive Operation Handbook gatheringall relevant reliability standards;
  • the preparation of an adequate legal frame aiming at achievingenforceability for UCTE standards for both TSO and gridusers
