EPP group leader in the European parliament, Joseph Daul has released a statement expressing his full confidence in Swedish prime minister Frederik Reinfeldt's ability to lead the EU over the next six months. Daul said:
"The Presidency of the EPP Group, the most influential in the European parliament, has already travelled to Sweden to prepare the work of the EU Presidency with the prime minister and members of his government.
"The EPP's first priority is to get out of the current crisis. Europe must set the example of a social market economy with rules. This is what we have agreed to do in the coming months with Mr Reinfeldt.
"The Presidency of the EPP group will participate in a meeting of the conference of presidents in Stockholm next Monday to discuss the priorities for the next six months, beginning with the appointment of the president of the European commission.
"In these difficult times for Europe, the EPP expects the Swedish presidency, which will be a solid presidency, to work in close cooperation with the European parliament and with the president of the European commission.
"I would also like Mr Reinfeldt to commit to pushing through the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the end of the year. I am confident that he will achieve this".
