MEPs Brok and Karas sent to Georgia to report on developments

EPP-ED group chair Joseph Daul has sent two of his group's MEPs to Georgia to report back on the situation there.

German deputy Elmar Brok and Austrian Othmar Karas are travelling to Georgia on Tuesday to see the situation on the ground at first hand and engage in political talks.

Daul said in a statement on Monday, “The situation in Georgia continues to be unacceptable and the conditions on the ground unclear with conflicting reports.

“I have therefore asked Othmar Karas MEP, Vice Chairman of the EPP-ED Group, to undertake a visit to Georgia and report back without delay. He will be accompanied by Elmar Brok MEP, Coordinator of the European People's Party (EPP) for Foreign Affairs.”
 
In Tbilisi the two envoys will meet Mikhail Saakashvili, president of Georgia, as well as other government representatives, and will visit the cities of Gori and Tskhinvali.
 
Brok and Karas will report back about the mission to the European parliament's foreign affairs committee, which will hold an extraordinary session on Wednesday 20 August in Brussels.
