UKIP in hard hat Strasbourg protest
UKIP MEPs have staged a protest in parliament against the monthly Strasbourg commute.
Along with their colleagues from the parliament’s Ind/Dem Group the UKIP deputies appeared at Tuesday’s voting session in Brussels wearing hard hats to protest at what they called the “continued existence of the wasteful Strasbourg parliament building.”
The Strasbourg building’s hemicycle ceiling partly collapsed on August 7, forcing parliament's first post-recess plenary session to be held in Brussels.
“The roof has already fallen in on the Strasbourg building,” said UKIP leader Nigel Farage.
“We have no need of going there at all, as this week proves. Brussels is ample for the needs of the Parliament.”
"When the roof fell in, the rubble would have landed directly on the seats occupied by UKIP and the Ind/Dem group.”
“Now I am not saying that there is a conspiracy to wipe out euro-critical voices in the parliament, but you do have to ask.”
