MEPs have overwhelmingly adopted a new directive that recognises professional qualifications across EU member states.
The directive hopes to make it easier for professionals to work across the EU by eliminating current national constraints.
Rapporteur Stefano Zappala MEP, who steered the proposal through the parliament, said the directive will create a ‘general system which makes, for the first time, the free movement of professionals such as vets, architects and nurses within Europe really automatic’.
“It facilitates free movement of professionals, while safeguarding training standards and protecting the consumer”, said Zappala.
Green Party deputy, Heide Ruhle, welcomed the directive saying, “the new laws will abolish unjustified barriers to mobility and remove red tape”.
The directive should become law by June as both the EU council and commission had already agreed to parliament’s position.
