EU farm chief Franz Fischler has announced that Hungary will receive over €300 million in 2004-6 to support its rural communities.

Most of the money will go towards modernising agricultural production, focussing on hygiene rules and food processing so that Hungarian produce will meet the EU's consumer standards.

Other funds will flow into activites aimed at expanding rural business activities such as tourism and heritage sites.

Fischler praised Budapest for "the significant progress made...in its preparation for the future structural funds programmes" and expressed his hope for a "rapid implementation of the programme".
