Belgian police officers were forced to open fire on two car thieves attempting to crash through a barricade protecting EU leaders at crunch summit talks.
Police spokesman Christian de Coninck said the carjackers, who stole the vehicle of an unsuspecting businessman at around 7.30am on Saturday morning, appeared to be unaware of the heightened security around the Brussels conference venue.
Realising they were cornered on an avenue close to the European Council's Justus Lipsius building, the two men attempted to force a barbed wire barricade, prompting two shots from Belgian police officers.
One of the men suffered a slight injury to the arm and both are now in custody.
