France will not hold a referendum replay on the current EU constitution text, French president Jacques Chirac has declared.

One year ago French voters, followed by the Dutch, threw out the EU constitution plunging Europe into political crisis.

Speaking at the close of a Brussels EU summit on Friday , the French leader stressed the EU, and his country, would need more time to reflect on the way forward.

“I doubt that the French will vote again on the same text,” the French president told a press pack.

“We have decided to postpone the end of the reflection period because we have no solution to the current constitutional crisis”.

Europe’s has put the constitution question on hold until next June when a German EU presidency makes proposals.

A French EU presidency will be charged with a final decision at the end of 2008, long after Chirac has departed political office.
