If these tips contribute to a few less children in hospital, then that can only be a good thing

The European commission has unveiled 12 tips for choosing the right toys for Christmas and other occasions.

This includes such advice as reading all the labels on toys before purchasing, carefully selecting the right toys for children of different ages, and only buying toys from reputable retailers.

The list of 'dos and don'ts' also says parents should follow instructions carefully for proper toy assembly and use.

Beuc, the European consumers organisation, and Anec, the European consumer voice in standardisation, welcomed the move.

Monique Goyens, Beuc director general, said, "We all know that new toys make a child's day so we are eager to make sure that they can be enjoyed safely by children and without worry for those who purchase them.

"If these tips contribute to a few less children in hospital, then that can only be a good thing."

Stephen Russell, Anec secretary general, added, "Although European consumers expect the toys they buy from reputable retailers to be safe, these common-sense tips should help ensure that playtime for children is not only fun and educational but also accident and injury-free."
