EU aid for Gaza victims

Brussels has jumped to the aid of Palestine victims of Israeli incursions into the Gaza strip.

And announcing the eur1 million package, the European Commission took the opportunity to make political statements that run the risk of worsening already delicate relations with the Sharon administration and confirming Europe's reputation as siding with the Palestinians in the Middle East conflict.

Clearly calling the unhoused beneficiaries of the new aid package "victims," the commission added in a statment on Friday that Israel's demolition of houses in the Gaza Strip were "disproportionate acts that contravene international humanitarian law."

The attacks "aggravate the humanitarian and economic plight of the Palestinians" added EU development commissioner Poul Nielson.

Families suddenly finding themselves on the street as a result of the attacks will get EU handouts to help find temporary alternative shelter. Tents, blankets, mattresses and kitchen and hygiene kits will also be made available, according to the commission.
