EU arms embargo on China remains

The EU’s arms embargo on China is set to remain in place despite French pressure and the end of weapons sanctions against Libya.

Paris is angry that the EU is putting Beijing in the same category as Zimbabwe, Sudan and Burma.

But at a meeting of EU foreign ministers Ireland and Denmark insisted that more evidence of China’s respect for human rights needed to surface before the embargo can be lifted.

The UK, the Czech Republic and Sweden also believe a lifting of the ban to be premature, according to Le Monde.

The US also strongly wants the ban to remain in place.

The Times however reports that the EU is closer than ever to lifting the embargo
