European competition authorities have cleared General Electric's purchase of British healthcare firm Amersham.

The inquiry focused on whether the tie-up, allowing the two companies to share medical technology, would push out market competitors.

But the European Commission said it "was satisfied that such a strategy was unlikely to succeed and that European hospitals will continue enjoying competition from a variety of suppliers".

Amersham specialises in pharmaceuticals and health diagnostic equipment, such as scanners.

GE is an industrial company active in various manufacturing and technology businesses, including medical systems.
