The Polish lower house opted by 189 votes to 180 to put off its decision whether to ratify the EU constitution via referendum or parliament, putting the debate on ice until after Poland's general elections in September at the earliest.

The move could spell trouble for the treaty, as the next Polish parliament is set to be more heavily eurosceptic than the current chamber, parliamentary speaker and presidential candidate Wlodzimierz Cimosiewicz told the Polish press.
