Plans to create a Europe-wide crime record database are to be discussed by EU justice ministers on Monday.
The European Commission has drawn up proposals over several years and will be setting out its position on the subject in Brussels next week.
The machinery in place for information exchange on criminal records for individuals committing offences in more than one member state is “inadequate in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and timeliness”, argue EU officials.
The creation of a computerised network for exchanging information on serious criminals such as paedophiles and serial killers will come under the spotlight.
Due to the diversity of legal systems and criminal law across the EU member states, the spokesman said however that it “would not be realistic to have a single European record system”.
Other topics on the agenda will be discussion on the first annual Report on immigration and integration, readmission policy for migrants and Brussels document on a single European procedure for asylum seeker claims.
