EU leaders have named March 11 as a European memorial day to commemorate victims of terrorism.

Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the date had been chosen as a mark of "solidarity" with Spain which lost 190 citizens in a series of sychronised train bombings on March 11.

Hundreds of commuters were injured in the attacks, which struck during the morning rush hour.

Ferrero-Waldner said the memorial day would also be an occasion for Europeans to remember the importance of committing to the fight against terror.

"We must stand together in this fight," she said.

"We must counter the culture of death promoted by the terrorists with a culture of light."
