EU antitrust authorities have raided the offices of Europe’s major paper products manufacturers to investigate potential competition violations.

The European Commission conducted the searches, including one of Finnish print giant UPM-Kymmene, with the assistance from member state national competition authorities.

“The purpose of these inspections is to ascertain whether there is evidence of cartel agreements and related illegal practices concerning price fixing, fixing of other commercial terms, and/or allocation of customers,” said the EU executive on Tuesday.

“Several product markets in the European paper and forestry products sector would be affected by the alleged arrangements,” it added.

UPM-Kymmene is also one of a number of European companies being separately investigated by Brussels for joining a suspected cartel in industrial bags.
