The EU’s flagship satellite navigation project has stalled because of a disagreement over funding.

The development of the Galileo project has been delayed after the EU’s industrial partners, a consortium of eight companies that will help build the system, complained that Brussels had reneged on its promised investment.

The EU budget for 2007-2013 earmarks €900m for Galileo, despite the fact that the initial pledge was for €1bn.

The European commission is due to issue a progress report on funding negotiations sometime next week.

But according to officials, Brussels has no intention of lowering its sights because of a reduction in funding, and there will still be a minimum of 30 satellites in the Galileo system.
