EU peacekeepers have shot dead the wife of a Bosnian war crimes suspect and have injured his twelve year old son.

The suspect Dragomir Abazovic, engaged in a shoot out as EU troops raided his house in Kozoci, east of Sarajevo on Thursday.

According to a spokesman for the EU forces, Jem Thomas, Abazovic shot himself when he had no escape and is now in a critical condition.

“EUfor troops fired upon them and they returned fire. During the exchange two people in the house were injured,” said Thomas.

“The suspect, unable to escape, subsequently injured himself,” said Thomas.

The Bosnian Serb President, Dragan Cavic, has Vehemently condemned the killing, and has called for a full investigation into the exact circumstances of the killing.

“This is the EU forces most severe degradation and [represents] a complete destruction of confidence in its force,” said Cavic according to Reuters.

“It is tragic that the result of their operation should be the death of a wife of an alleged suspect and the injury of his young son."

"No matter what mandate EUfor was given, no one has the right to take an innocent human life by force"

EU forces are involved in searching for fugitive war criminals and in combating organized crime throughout Bosnia; they took over from a NATO force in 2004.
