EU picks new military chief

The EU has appointed a new military staff director - General David Leakey.

Tuesday’s appointment by EU ministers will see the British military commander replace General Jean-Paul Perruche of France from March next year.

The EU’s military staff director is responsible for performing early warning, strategic planning and situation assessment.

The role falls under the jurisdiction of EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana.
