Confidence in the eurozone economy was boosted during April, with Belgium, France and Ireland seeing the most improvement, the European Commission said on Friday.

The commission's economic sentiment indicator for the eurozone rose by a solid 0.5 points to 96.6.in April.

In the EU as a whole the ESI rose by 0.4 points to 97.2 as a decline in the UK mitigated results.

Industry confidence was particularly strong, but the retail and construction also saw good improvement, the commission said.

But consumers are still holding back, with no change in confidence for the second month in a row.

Improvement was spread throughout all countries according to the ESI although there was a particularly strong jump in confidence in Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland and Sweden.
