Denmark's former prime minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen has been elected the new leader of the Party of European Socialists.
Rasmussen narrowly beat former Italian prime minister Giuliano Amato, who will now become senior vice-president, alongside vice-presidents Rudolf Scharping, from Germany, Spain's Rafael Estrella and Jan Marinus Wiersma from the Netherlands.
Looking ahead to the June European elections, the Socialist party adopted a five-point manifesto setting out commitments to stimulate job growth, manage migration and fight terrorism.
The party of European Socialists has the second largest representation in the European Parliament, after the centre right European Peoples Party (EPP-ED).
