STRASBOURG: ALDE group leader Graham Watson has stressed the need for urgency before Wednesday’s key debate on EU migration policy.

He called for more dramatic changes to take place in the relationship between the EU and third countries.

“In the end, unless we are prepared to change our trade practices, people will continue to vote with their feet,” he said.

“We have a choice, either we take their goods or we take their people,” he added.

Ahead of the commission statement on dangerous toys, Watson also spoke about the CE safety mark.

“Our focus will be on promoting the reliability of the CE mark as a quality and safety standard,” he said.

“We will be calling on the commission to clarify the liability of producers and importers in the case of misuse of the CE mark,” he added.

The ALDE leader also expressed optimism about opening up rail passenger transport to competition with the third railway package agreement.

“This has worked well in the airline sector. We hope now to extend it”, he said.
