EU set to move back from biofuels targets
EU legislators on Monday moved back from an ambitious target to raise Europe's use of biofuels, reports the IHT.
The appeal of biofuels has waned due to an increasing amount of evidence which shows that the kind of targets proposed by the EU, originally for 10 per cent of transportation fuels to be derived from biofuels by 2020, are contributing to deforestation and helping force up food prices.
MEPs on the European parliament’s environment committee called for a much lower target of 4 per cent and said the measures should be reviewed by 2015 before increasing the target again.
