Germany opposes cuts in payments to EU farmers
Germany’s agriculture minister has opposed any cuts in farm subsidies, despite global food price rises, reports the IHT.According to the Guardian, Horst Seehofer told journalists visiting Germany on Wednesday that the population explosion and rising living standards in emerging economies were the reason for soaring food prices – and not EU agriculture policy or biofuels production.
Les Echos says Germany is backing a French view that EU farm subsidies should be increased to combat the world food crisis.
The paper goes on to say that Berlin would prefer “no agreement to a bad agreement” on farm subsidies at the WTO.
