France counts on forests to meet EU climate change targets
France is hoping to create a major new source of renewable energy from wood, using its extensive forest network which covers more than 30 per cent of the mainland, Libération reports.
The French environment ministry has backed 22 biomass projects across France, agreeing to buy the electricity they generate at a preferential rate.
France, like other EU countries, has pledged to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 20 per cent of the total energy mix by 2020, and biomass should contribute 20 per cent of this target, the ministry says.
