UK accused of blocking EU green energy law
UK premier Gordon Brown has been accused of trying to water down an EU directive designed to give renewable energy sources easier access to national electricity grids, reports the Telegraph.
It says the UK government has been pushing to amend a key passage in the directive, so that instead of saying that EU member-states "shall" give priority access to renewables, it would say only that they "may" do so if they wish.
Meanwhile, El País reports that a student activist glued his hand to the British premier's jacket on Wednesday in protest over plans to extend heathrow airport.
After the incident, he said he was trying to make Brown "stick to his environmental promises".
