EU will not desert Irish farmers, says trade chief

EU trade chief Peter Mandelson said on Tuesday that Europe willnot abandon Irish farmers in global trade talks, as concerns over agricultureclouded Ireland'sreferendum on the new reform treaty, reports the Guardian.

Irish beef and dairy farmers led 10,000 demonstratorsthrough the streets of Dublinearlier this month against Mandelson's plans to offer cuts in EU farm importtariffs in an attempt to secure a long-awaited WTO deal.
