The Telegraph and Irish Times report on the opening of EU embassies throughout the world since the entry into force of the Lisbon treaty.

The Telegraph raises concerns that the 54 new embassies in countries such as Afghanistan, China, India and 33 African nations could shift power from Britain's consular facilities "as Brussels establishes itself as a world power".

However, the Irish Times describes the process as one of "strengthening Europe's diplomatic presence" outside the EU, saying it marks the start of a scaling down of the diplomatic work carried out for by the country that holds the rotating presidency.

The move comes in ahead of the establishment EU external action service, which be set up under the Lisbon treaty, the paper adds.
