Cuba and the EU met in Paris on Thursday for the first time since Brussels imposed sanctions on Havana in 2003, says El País.

The breakdown of EU-Cuba relations came after a spate of summary trials by Fidel Castro’s government put critics of the regime in jail for up to 28 years, says the paper, but the coming to power of Fidel’s brother Raúl has eased tensions and allowed the suspension of sanctions.
