Russia-Georgia peace talks break down in Geneva

16th October 2008

The Financial Times says EU, UN and OSCE mediated talks between Georgia and Russia have been suspended after the Georgian side refused to meet representatives.

The Irish Examiner says the Russian delegation left talks even before they ended, but international mediators have said the suspension is temporary and meetings will resume in November.

Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia’s president, had told Le Figaro just ahead of talks, “We are willing to talk to Russia, but they don’t seem interested in negotiating.”

But he added that he expects Russian troops to eventually withdraw from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and that Moscow will take “a more civilised line”.
