Russian troops begin Georgian withdrawal
El País says Russia has begun to withdraw its troops from Georgian territory, in line with a French-brokered agreement that stipulates forces must be out of the regions surrounding South Ossetia and Abkhazia by 10 October.
The paper says that according to reports from Reuters, a column of between 50 and 60 military vehicles has left a base in the west of Georgia, and has entered the territory of the secessionist republic of Abkhazia.
The IHT quotes Marat Kulakhmetov, commander of Russian peacekeepers in the region, who said that the pull-out would be complete within a day.
