EU bans Chinese milk powder imports following scandal
The EU has banned all imported milk products from China following concerns that contaminated milk powder from the country may be circulating in Europe, reports the IHT.
The European Food Safety Authority decided on Thursday that there was a potential risk to children in Europe from imported Chinese milk products contaminated with the industrial chemical melaminem, which have sickened more than 50,000 young children in China in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that three Taiwanese children and a mother are sick with kidney stones as a result of the contaminated milk, while in Japan a confectioner's cookies have found to contain the toxic chemical melamine.
Four children in China have died from contamination.
