Romania defends its record on corruption ahead of EU report
Romania has fended off criticism from the EU and independent experts that it isn’t doing enough to fight corruption, says the International Herald Tribune.
The paper quotes Romanian foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu as saying on Monday that the law was being firmly applied and the judiciary was now strengthened.
"Romania is fighting corruption. Only recently, the police force from a county close to Bucharest were dismissed and placed under arrest for producing false driving licenses."
Comanescu was speaking just two days before the commission is to deliver its regular report on Bulgaria and Romania, dealing specifically with corruption.
Leaked last week, the report on Bulgaria accuses the country of mishandling EU funds, and the executive has threatened to suspend pre-accession and structural money.
