The Wall Street Journal reports that Friends of the Earth Europe has urged the EU to scrap its 2020 biofuels targets, saying that it will not help the climate and would cost consumers €126bn.

The paper reports campaigner Robbie Blake as saying, "Europe's squeezed consumers and taxpayers are paying the price for a flawed green policy that delivers no environmental benefits."

The debate on this issue has intensified following the questioning of biofuels' carbon neutral status by a panel of European environment agency scientists who provide scientific background to EU policy decisions.
